Toshiba America Business Solutions today announced the recycling of a company record amount of nearly 228 metric tons of used toner products in 2017 through its "Zero Waste to Landfill" program.
Toshiba has prevented more than 1,000 metric tons of e-waste – equivalent to the weight of 110 tandem-axle (ten-wheel) dump trucks – from filling open land since the program began in 2008. Toshiba also accepts and recycles other vendors' spent toner consumables, the first manufacturer to do so.
Through its partnership with internationally-recognized recycler, Close the Loop, Toshiba recovers and separates materials from spent imaging products into usable toner, plastic and metal utilizing a zero-thermal recovery process. These components often re-enter the supply chain for use in future products, contributing to the circular economy.
Powder extracted from recycled toner cartridges is used to develop an asphalt product for resurfacing roads. Pens and rulers are also made from plastic parsed from spent toner consumables.
"Toshiba's commitment to the environment is a core value of our company and something that's taken very seriously by our leadership and workforce," said Tom Walter, Toshiba America Business Solutions vice president of distribution and aftermarket sales. "We are pleased that many of our clients share this interest and the success of our 'Zero Waste to Landfill' initiative is just one example of how they have embraced this mindset."
Toshiba’s toner recycling program is one of the key reasons why many of the company's industry-recognized e-STUDIO™ multifunction printers are on the EPEAT (Electronic Products Environmental Assessment Tool) registry. EPEAT is the definitive global rating system for greener electronics.
